Policy for Gender Equal Societies

How can gender equality be brought to the fore within governmental and institutional structures and strategies? Who holds the levers that can help make meaningful change?

Award-winning EU gender equality policy specialist Halliki Voolma joins the Director of the University of Cambridge Centre for Gender Studies, Jude Browne, to discuss how legislation and policy can help build fairer societies, promote transformational leadership and tackle urgent issues such as economic inequality and violence against women.

About the speakers:

Halliki Voolma (KC 2007) designs EU gender equality policy at the European Commission, where she has helped facilitate the development of major legal and policy initiatives including the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-25 and the first-ever EU legislative proposal on combating violence against women and domestic violence. She serves in the inaugural European Commission Taskforce on Equality, working to mainstream gender and other equality considerations into all policy areas. Halliki is currently writing a book based on her PhD research at King’s on intimate partner violence against migrant women. She is Co-Chair of the Gates Cambridge Alumni Association Board. 

Jude Browne is a Fellow in Human, Social and Political Sciences at King’s, and the Jessica and Peter Frankopan Director of the University of Cambridge Centre for Gender Studies. She is the inaugural winner of the Aaron Rapport Prize and winner of the University of Cambridge Pilkington Prize. Jude’s research interests are in political theories of equality, feminist theory, political responsibility, public interest, public policy, structural injustice, rights, and the impact of technology on society.
